Tools for Engaging Students in Meaningful Work

Student engagement is a priority. When students are provided with meaningful work, there is a greater impact on motivation, engagement and learning. We hope to provide middle grades units which promote meaningful student work aligned to the standards. Here are some foundational elements we aim to include in Engage Tools units.

Standards-Based Content

Units are aligned to Common Core Standards for quick simulation into state standards. Citation of the standards is noted on the first pages of each unit.

Challenging Inquiry

Units include inquiry that questions beyond the surface using principles of Webb’s Depth of Knowledge and Bloom’s Taxonomy. Find more DOK and Bloom’s Taxonomy resources at https://www.ascd.org and https://bloomstaxonomy.net.

Project-Based Learning Principles

Units include principles of project-based learning. Often units include authentic Project Roles, Essential Questions and Key Student Questions to activate learning in a thoughtful direction. A variety of assessments and public products lead students to demonstrate and transfer learning. Suggestions are provided on how to incorporate additional elements to meet a Gold-Standard PBL. Find more PBL resources (free) at www.pblworks.org.

STEAM Connections

Units include suggestions for STEAM connections. The suggestions range from delving deeper into the science behind a topic to the creation of digital products. Find more articles and practical tips for incorporating STEAM at www.edutopia.org.
